The Battle of the Somme was the defining battle of the First World War and was fought from July to November in 1916. The day it started, July 1st, was the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army. Hundreds of thousands would lose their lives in the four months of fighting. This was the beginning of modern all-arms warfare. With this level of bloodshed, it isn't surprising that the battlefield is reputed to be incredibly haunted.
