5-17-26: A Church That Lasts

As we reach the conclusion of Romans, we discover that Paul's final chapter is far more than a simple list of greetings. It's a masterclass in what makes a church truly endure through generations. The foundation is unmistakable: Jesus Christ himself. We're challenged to see that a lasting church celebrates unity not as uniformity, but as diverse believers united by the gospel. The names Paul mentions represent different backgrounds, ethnicities, and social standings, yet they're bound together by their shared transformation through Christ. This unity isn't passive; it's built through faithful service, fruitful sacrifice, and a familial spirit that treats fellow believers as true brothers and sisters. We're reminded that in a world increasingly divided along every conceivable line, the church should stand as a radical alternative where the ground is level at the foot of the cross. Nobody needs Jesus more or less than anyone else. When we grasp this truth, we fulfill Christ's prayer in John 17 that we would be one, so the world would believe. The question confronting us is whether we're contributing to this unity or merely consuming it, whether we're crew members advancing the mission or passengers enjoying the amenities.
